Ingredients

1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 garlic clove, minced and mashed to a paste with 1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon English-style dry mustard, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon or to taste, crumbled
1 large head red-leaf lettuce, rinsed, spun dry, and torn into pieces
1 bunch watercress, coarse stems discarded and sprigs rinsed and spun dry
1/2 small red onion, sliced thin
